In the poem “We Wear the Mask” it talks about the struggles that healthcare workers have in trying to provide the best care they can. Its first stanza is heartbreaking, that the workers are paying their debt to humanity by giving back as the job tears at their hearts. They work every day to help people during the hardest point in their lives but they can not show that the job hurts them as well. That losing patients every day does not break their hearts and wear them down. This is a beautifully written poem that demonstrates a lot of the ideas shown in the 5B documentary. The nurses in that hospital were breaking in the grief they had from losing so many patients but they kept going and trying to make the hospital a more comforting place. They continued fighting for their patients even when they were having to fight their tears and that is what this poem demonstrates, that we need to remember that healthcare workers are humans that break a little every time they lose a patient but they are also heroes that keep fighting for their patient’s life.

    Hi Cayley,

I totally agree with your assessment of the first stanza in “We Wear the Mask.” The author manages to tie in the feelings of helplessness and duty to the workers whose job it is to help people by putting themselves at risk. You did a great job at verbalizing the effect that this poem has on its listeners.
