For Tomorrow’s Lecture

Well, folks. This is it. We go live with our *Online* Healing in Ethnography and Literature class tomorrow at 1:25 PM.

We have pasted the invitation to the meetings for the rest of the term below this note.

The key thing that you will want to do is set up Zoom for your computer. We will log onto the site about 1:00 PM to make sure everything is go.

To log into the class, go to

https://unc.zoom.us/my/grantglass

When you click on that link, it will automatically open up Zoom to get you started. (If you have not installed Zoom yet you will be asked to do so. You should log in about 15 minutes before class starts just to make sure that it is working properly.) You will be able to log into the class before we are there. We will use that link to get to each class for the rest of the term.

You will see a link on the schedule to selections Daniel Defoe’s A Journal of a Plague Year as our discussion text for tomorrow. Please read it if you haven’t already. (It’s short!) We will hear a wonderful lecture from Jane on this text and we will discuss the text within the chat function of Zoom (more details on chat are here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/203650445-In-Meeting-Chat).

Hang in there. Have courage,

-Your Healing in Ethnography Literature Team

Forum Posts and Resources

Hi all,

Hope everyone’s first day “back” went well. We have had a few questions about the new forum posts and wanted to clarify what is expected:

  • Between now and the end of the term, you will need to post to the forums (https://anth272engl264.web.unc.edu/forums/) three (3) times.
  • All you need to do is to post in the forums on two (2) of the readings (the ones remaining in the semester) and you will react to one (1) of your classmate’s posts as well.
  • Please post within your assigned TA’s forum within 72 hours of the due date (for the Defoe reading, you have until 1:25pm on Saturday (3/29/20)).
  • The posts are less formal and shorter than your reading responses, all we are looking for is an engagement with the reading with a focus on our class concepts.

Lastly, here is a list of some good resources for you on transitioning to online learning: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZxL7xN7lmkay8N2pwpWvS1u7auzFEcBY6FCG1rXW20/edit#heading=h.45710otfxn7f

Please let us know if anything is unclear.

Take care and be safe.

Sincerely,

Your Healing in Ethnography and Literature Team

Important Information from your Instructors

Dear Students,

We write, knowing that all our lives have been profoundly transformed since we last saw you. Our world is changing daily. With so much uncertainty, we want to give you specific details about what to expect in ANTH 272/ENGL 264 moving forward.

  • YOU: Of primary concern to us is your safety and wellbeing. We will be in touch with each of you, by email, to hear how you are doing and what special considerations you may need.
  • Readings: We have adapted the readings to meet our changed times. Please check out the revisions here: https://anth272engl264.web.unc.edu/schedule/
  • Writing: The due date for Essay #2 is Friday, March 27 at 11:59 p.m. Your Reading Response is due Wednesday, April 8th at 11:59pm; assignment to follow.
  • Lectures: You will have the option of “live” class or flexible viewing. We will create Zoom lectures at our normal times: Wednesday & Friday at 1:25 p.m. (Details to follow.) Lectures will be shortened to 20 minutes, with 20 minutes for discussion using the Zoom chat feature. We will post recorded lectures (with captions) to our website by 3:00 p.m. the same day.
  • NEW Discussion forum: Your TAs will create a discussion forum for each recitation group. Over the remaining four weeks, we ask that you each post two responses to the readings and reply to one of your classmates’ postings (within 72 hours of “class”).
  • Final: The final options remain roughly the same: you will have the choice of a take-home exam (with two days to complete) or a final project. Please take a look at https://anth272engl264.web.unc.edu/course-requirements/for more details.

We recognize that people you know and love are facing immense hardships. Our circumstances, and our spirits, are being buffeted. Therefore our bywords moving forward will be flexibility, adaptability, and kindness. Please keep the lines of communication open; all four of us are here for you as we navigate these uncertain waters together.

With warm good wishes,

Michele Rivkin-Fish

Dear Anth272/Engl264 Students,

Hope everyone is enjoying their extended Spring Break! With the change in University  schedule, we have decided to move the due date for Essay #2 to Friday, March 27th at 11:59pm. Please let your T.A. know if you have any questions or concerns with completing this assignment. We will be in touch next week with more details about the rest of the term. Stay Safe.

Sincerely,

Your Teaching Team

Important survey to complete before Saturday (3/14) at noon.

Dear Students in ANTH272/ENGL264,

Due to the spread of coronavirus, or COVID-19, we wanted to get a sense as to what our capacity for moving our classes online is. As of right now, we are NOT going online yet. We anticipate that we will, but as far as we know, we’re just in contingency planning mode right now.

We know what challenges we might face in shifting our lectures, discussions, and activities online, but we don’t know what challenges you face.

As we think about contingency planning, we want to be sure to account for any challenges, needs, or barriers you have in relation to online learning.

Feel free to answer fully anonymously. There is also a question at the end where you can voluntarily share your name if you would like to be identified, perhaps so we can address specific concerns you have.

Our deadline for communicating with you is this Sunday (3/15), so we’ve set a deadline on this survey for Saturday (3/14) at noon. That’ll give us time to read through your responses and incorporate them into our plans for transitioning to online teaching if needed.

Here is the SURVEY
